The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:5

Like many songs I write, it all came at once - the guitar part, the melody, and the lyrics. And, like many songs, once the recording process began, it became a grueling 2-year process. I was working full-time, and when 2020 happened, Paul (my co-creator) also started working full-time. It’s much of the modern artist story - balancing work, art, and some semblance of life outside the two.

I was thinking of our tendency to not let go - of things, of people, of the past. This song is complicated, in a way, for me. When I wrote it, I had recently felt a wave of disappointment and hurt. It spawned from a very specific moment, but over the long recording process I had time to digest its meaning in a deeper way.

I realized this song is also about all of us, how we all pile things up around us, cling to the material for satisfaction, keep busy, all to avoid what’s buried deep within us. I realized this song is also about me. Not long before this song I became a Christian, and with the joy of freedom in confessing my sin came the harsh light, pruning shears, and - let’s be honest - backhoe of the Holy Spirit that dug up deep roots of past hurt, mountains of idolatry, and old patterns hiding in the dark corners of my being.

Lastly, in a way it’s also about my music. I’ve been writing most of my life and dreamed of making, sharing, and performing music, but I’ve been too afraid to bring it into the light. This release holds a special place in my heart as marking the transition of who I was to who God is helping me to become.

This song was co-produced with Aimee by Paul Alexander, formerly of Midlake, in their home studio. Aimee wrote the song on acoustic guitar, and featured elements include Moog mono synth, drum programming, and autoharp. Influences include Alice in Wonderland, Maggie Rogers, and The King and I.

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John 3:19

Let us not be afraid of the light.
