The other day I was really craving chocolate ice cream, but I’m trying to be more disciplined about not eating refined sugar. I’ve heard about banana “nice” cream but never tried it or looked up a recipe. Figuring I could probably just throw something together and see how it turned out, I decided to give chocolate banana “nice cream” a try.

What I ended up with was better than I could have expected. The consistency came out a little smoother than ice cream but slightly thicker than a milkshake. As my husband and I were devouring the new concoction, he says, “It’s like a Frosty.” He hit the nail on the head. We both loved it so much I thought I had to share!

Made With Only Four Ingredients

One thing I love about this recipe is that it has a small ingredients list, which I find to generally be a good indication of being better for you. It’s frozen bananas, yogurt or milk, non-sweetened cocoa powder and very dark maple syrup (or honey). You can add vanilla extract if you want to give it an extra pop of flavor. I made it without, though, and it was still delicious.

Different Options for the Dairy (Or Non-Dairy)

I’ve mentioned on previous posts that my stomach sometimes doesn’t do so well with dairy, so I wanted to give different options you can use in your Frosty so it fits best with your body and taste. You can go vegan, or not - either way will taste great!

  • Oat Milk Yogurt

This is what I used, and it gave the Frosty a nice, creamy texture.

  • Grass-Fed Plain Yogurt

  • Coconut Milk

I also tried coconut milk on another round, and it tasted great, too! The consistency still had that nice balance for being spoon or straw worthy.

  • Low-Temp Pasteurized Grass-Fed Milk

Summertime is perfect for cold treats like this one, and you can enjoy it without the guilt or regret of refined sugar or tons of ingredients!

Healthy Chocolate Frosty Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 frozen bananas

  • 3/4 cup yogurt (I use oat milk yogurt, or I use coconut milk)

  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder

  • 2 tsp dark maple syrup or local honey

  • 1-2 tsp vanilla (optional)

Instructions

  1. Break up frozen bananas into four pieces each and put into food processor or blender. If using a food processor, put on chop setting first to break them into smaller pieces. If using a blender, pulse or blend until broken into small pieces.

  2. Add yogurt or milk, cocoa powder, maple syrup and vanilla (if desired) into container.

  3. Switch to puree (if applicable) and blend until smooth.

  4. Pour into two 16oz cups or four 8oz cups.

  5. Enjoy! My husband likes to use a straw, and I like to use a spoon. It’s great either way!
